The piece

Rear to Protect was inspired by a photograph taken by Pola Zhu of my horse, Brylant — a stallion at the time — captured in a moment of raw, instinctive self-defense.

Working with Brylant taught me that boundaries are not about hardening. They’re about clarity. This painting reflects a sensitivity that doesn’t collapse — a softness that knows when to rise.

The rearing horse is not panicked or out of control. He is responding. Protecting. Communicating without apology.

This piece was created during a period where I learned to differentiate between aggression and self-protection — in my horses and in myself. It holds the moment where inner awareness becomes outward action. Where the inner child is no longer negotiated away.
