The Creative Process: Embracing Mistakes and Finding Meaning Through Art

Introduction:
The creative process isn’t always neat and tidy—in fact, it’s often the opposite. It’s messy, unpredictable, and sometimes, it’s downright chaotic. But that’s where the magic happens. When we allow ourselves to embrace the mess, we open ourselves up to authenticity and transformation. Let’s take a journey through my creative process and how I learned to embrace mistakes as a pathway to healing.

High School Beginnings: Painting Through OCD
Back in high school, I struggled with OCD—every little mistake felt like the end of the world. When I began painting with acrylics, it was my way of confronting those feelings. I remember one day when I dropped my paintbrush, and it streaked across the canvas, ruining what I’d been working on for hours. My immediate instinct was panic—I felt the familiar wave of fear wash over me.

But instead of fixing it, I let the mistake stay. I curled up on the floor, feeling the panic rise, the heat in my chest, the tightness in my throat. I let myself experience the emotions fully until they passed. When I got back up, I looked at the streak differently. Instead of seeing it as a mistake, I saw it as a new opportunity—a chance to turn that streak into something beautiful.

The Transformation: Embracing Imperfection
Since that day, my art has been a series of “mistakes”—each one a chance to create something unexpected. Whether it’s a drip of paint that runs down the canvas or a misplaced brushstroke, I incorporate it into the piece. Art, like life, isn’t about perfection; it’s about expression.

When I look back at those paintings, I see growth. I see how every “mistake” taught me to let go, to be flexible, to find beauty in the unexpected. The same applies to life—sometimes, the best things come from the moments we least expect.

How to Embrace Mistakes in Your Own Creative Process Whether you’re an artist or not, embracing imperfection can be transformative. Here’s how you can start:

1. Reframe Your Perspective: Instead of seeing a mistake as a failure, view it as an opportunity for growth. Ask yourself, What new direction could this open up? or How can this add depth to my work? Sometimes, the unexpected leads to the most powerful outcomes.

2. Experiment with Freedom: Set aside time to create without any expectations or goals. Whether it’s painting, writing, or any other creative activity, let it be a space where mistakes are not just accepted but welcomed. This practice not only helps you grow as an artist but also teaches you to be more adaptable in life.

3. Reflect and Learn: After you’ve completed your creative process, take a moment to reflect. What did you learn from this experience? How did embracing mistakes change the outcome? This practice of self-reflection will help you see how valuable those unexpected moments truly are.

A Personal Story: The Power of Letting Go
One of my most cherished pieces was created during a difficult time when I felt stuck, both emotionally and creatively. As I painted, I let my emotions flow, allowing thick, gunky textures to form on the canvas—representing the emotional “baggage” I felt weighed down by. There was a point when I accidentally smeared the paint, creating a chaotic mess of colors.

In that moment, I chose to let it be. I stepped back, observed the chaos, and saw that it mirrored how I felt inside—disorganized, frustrated, blocked. But instead of trying to fix it, I continued working with the texture, adding layers and using the streaks as a foundation for growth.

What emerged was a painting that felt like a breakthrough. It was as if the act of allowing that chaos freed me from the heaviness I’d been carrying. Looking at the piece now, I don’t see a mistake—I see freedom, release, and the beauty of transformation.

The Takeaway: Finding Meaning in Imperfection
Art, and life itself, is about embracing the process. It’s about allowing yourself to be vulnerable, to make mistakes, and to transform those mistakes into something meaningful. When we let go of the need for everything to be perfect, we give ourselves the freedom to truly grow. Just like in our connection with horses, when we approach with an open heart, the outcome is often beyond anything we could have imagined.
